UN Chief's Message to JCI Leadership Summit

The 2009 JCI Leadership summit - promo video here - took place at the UN office in Geneva from 28 - 30 July.

The Summit organized by JCI in partnership with the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and the UN Global Compact, brought together active citizens to brainstorm on global warming issues and how JCI through its members can act locally in a sustainable way to create a global impact.

Georg Kell, Executive Director of the UN Global Compact delivered the UN Chief's message in which Ban Ki-Moon thanked JCI members for their engagement to climate change, a challenge which threatens water, natural resources, food supply and international security.

Five (5) proposals were arrived at the end of the Summit. These proposals - listed below - will be submitted for endorsement during the 2009 JCI World Congress, taking place at Hammamet, Tunisia in November 2009 - promo video here.

  1. Implementation of a training program for JCI members and the community, including the causes and impact of climate change, the presentation of solutions that can be implemented; teaching behaviors to adopt.
  2. Application of the principles of sustainability in any event organized by the JCI: reduction of heating and air conditioning, use of recycled materials and new information technologies, etc ...
  3. Create a position (office) of environmental issues and sustainable development in every local and national organization.
  4. Development of at least one project per organization on sustainable development (water, energy, biodiversity, transport and recycling)
  5. The creation of an award for the Best Green Company.
JCI is surely committed to face the climate change challenges, but this commitment can be more effective if you take aim and act now!
