Who Will Be the Next to Shut Down?

The web counts a large number of free service suppliers starting with free email account providers through blogging platforms to social network. A question I usually ask myself is that for how long will these services be kept free, when it is obvious that the only free stuff – I mean FREE - on earth it breathing air (polluted or not)?

Like many other users worldwide I am a victim of Tr.im’s shutting down. Tr.im is (I mean was) a free url shortening service, which also offered detailed statistics on the various long links you made short. It was really helpful in planning, deploying and tracking online marketing strategies in real-time. Unfortunately, the service is off the web for a number of reasons explained on its blog here.

How do free service suppliers sustain themselves? Is it only online advertisement which contributes to make huge services run? These are questions (certainly not the only ones) which need to be uncovered to better understand how free services are sustained and improved at the same time.

Who will be the next to shut down its free services from the web? Time will tell us. Good bye tr.im, I really enjoyed your services and tools. However, you give me no choice but to search for another FREE url shortening provider.

One has to wonder too when the free sites are going to start charging for basic services. So many of us are dependent on sites like gmail and yahoo for news that they would really have us over a barrel.
